For young creatives in Kisii, a smartphone, a good idea and a sense of humour are becoming more than tools for entertainment — they are opening doors to a possible livelihood.
This is the world Senator Essy Okenyuri encountered when she recently met Nyakababa Comics, a trio of young men whose unusual blend of comedy, music and content creation has been winning them fans.

The three have carved out their niche by taking popular songs and giving them humorous twists, turning familiar tunes into playful and relatable pieces of content.
Okenyuri said their creativity had made an impression on her even before she met them.
“I normally end up laughing even before watching any piece they create,” she said after meeting the trio for the first time.
But beyond the laughter, Okenyuri said she saw young people willing to experiment with their talents and create something of their own.
“It was such an exciting and refreshing experience,” she said, describing the encounter as an opportunity to see the courage and creativity behind their work.
GPC has learnt that her interaction with the region’s creatives did not start or end with Nyakababa crew.
She also met Kisii-based content creator Dimoza Dimoza, popularly known as Chospati, whose satire and humour have earned him recognition in the local digital space.
For Okenyuri, creators such as Dimoza are doing more than making people laugh.
They are using creativity to tell stories, showcase Gusii culture and shape conversations while exploring new ways of earning a living.
“Beyond the laughter and entertainment, our creatives are telling our stories, shaping conversations, showcasing our culture and creating livelihoods through their talent,” she said.
Her meetings come at a time when social media has given young people new platforms to turn skills that were once dismissed as mere hobbies into creative enterprises.
Okenyuri said Kisii’s young creatives deserve encouragement and platforms that can help them transform their talents into sustainable livelihoods.
“I am always passionate about encouraging and motivating the young people in our community to always use their skills, talent and creativity to earn a living,” she said.
“Indeed Kisii got talent.”
