He watches over the outside, while the property inside is locked

By Shem Onderi

All day, the guard is safe, properly discharging his activities in a bright day

No fear of darkness, no threats of invaders, there are many people around

Each minding his business

Then night falls, the night guard is in danger,

He be-mourns the darkness with its misgivings

Few people can be seen passing by, none seeks for services

No one to converse with the guard, he is beaten by cold

The mall, under the night guard’s watch is dead silent, dark

He watches over the outside, while the property inside is locked

The night guard is all alone, armed with an open eye-in the dark

Then the disruptive sleep attempts the night guard, in the middle of the night

He falls to the temptation, into a corner, catches few naps

Lo, the thieves take advantage of the slumber, break in,

Empty the stores of valuables, maybe harm the night guard, tie him tight

The night guard is now in danger, his work exposed, his life threatened

His salary deducted, or with held on account of accomplice

His children await for his safe return

The night guard must persevere, awaiting another night shift
