Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has urged Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to heed calls by Kenya Kwanza leaders to join President William Ruto’s camp ahead of the next General Election.

Njuki, who also chairs the Council of Governors, argued that Kalonzo stood a better chance of securing a senior position in government by working with Ruto rather than remaining in the opposition.

He said the country’s third-highest office was open, suggesting that the former Vice-President could fit into the proposed political arrangement without disrupting the Ruto-Kithure Kindiki ticket.

Speaking in Mukothima during the launch of the Nandora Water Project, Njuki accused Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua of holding Kalonzo hostage through demands in exchange for political support.

He argued that Kalonzo had a better opportunity to negotiate directly with Ruto and secure a favourable political deal.

Njuki’s remarks come amid renewed political manoeuvring within the opposition following an incident in which Kalonzo was booed during the launch of Linda Mwananchi Movement offices in Nairobi, attended by other opposition leaders.

The governor said the former Vice-President had walked into a trap intended to humiliate him.

The incident has also drawn attention to the political relationship between DCP and the Linda Mwananchi Movement, with DCP deputy party leader Cleophas Malala indicating that the party was open to negotiations with The Equitable Party (TEP) leader Edwin Watenya Sifuna’s political outfit.

Njuki further argued that Kalonzo’s political interests would be better served by supporting Kindiki’s political ambitions, citing the geographical proximity between Kitui County, where Kalonzo hails from, and Tharaka Nithi, the Deputy President’s home region.

He also recalled that both Ruto and Kindiki had previously campaigned for Kalonzo during his pursuit of the country’s presidency.
