Kenya’s Baseball5 team has secured a place in the semifinals of the ongoing Youth Olympic Games after recording impressive victories over world number three France and fifth-ranked Mexico.

Ranked 10th globally, Kenya has defied expectations in the competition, winning its opening two Group A matches against higher-ranked opponents to underline its growing ambitions on the international stage.

The Kenyan side opened its campaign with a 2-1 victory over France before following it up with a convincing 2-0 win against Mexico at Tour de l’Oeuf on Saturday.

The victory over France was particularly impressive, coming just hours after the Kenyan contingent arrived in Senegal on the morning of the match, leaving the players with limited time to rest, acclimatise and prepare.

Against Mexico, the East Africans once again demonstrated resilience and determination to overcome a formidable opponent, with the result carrying added significance because of a previous encounter between the two countries.

Kenya turn tables on Mexico

For captain Shantel Lucianah, the team’s success has been built on courage, hard work and the ability of players to support one another, particularly when mistakes occur during matches.

She attributed the impressive performances to the team’s unity and determination to deliver despite the pressure of representing the country at a major international competition.

Lucianah also credited the intensive preparations ahead of the Games, revealing that training sessions often stretched from morning until evening as the players worked towards their Olympic ambitions.

The victory over Mexico was especially satisfying for Brighton Omondi Kelly, given the history between the two sides.

Mexico defeated Kenya’s junior team at last year’s World Cup, with several of the players involved in that encounter now featuring in the senior squad.

The defeat had remained a source of disappointment and provided additional motivation ahead of Saturday’s rematch.

Kelly acknowledged that Kenya’s performance was not particularly strong but praised the team’s mentality and determination in securing both sets against an opponent they had never faced at this level before.

Squad rotation ahead of knockouts

Head coach Joel Wangicho welcomed the team’s ability to rise to the occasion against two highly ranked opponents but cautioned that there were still areas requiring improvement.

He observed that Kenya had taken advantage of mistakes made by its opponents, adding that the technical bench would work on addressing weaknesses as the competition entered its decisive stages.

Wangicho also disclosed plans to rotate the squad in the remaining group-stage fixture against Syria, giving more players an opportunity to feature while managing the physical demands of the competition.

With a semifinal berth already secured, Kenya will be seeking a third consecutive victory against Syria to complete an unbeaten group-stage campaign before turning its attention to the knockout rounds.

The Baseball5 competition is making its debut at the Youth Olympic Games, adding another dimension to the sporting event through a format that is attracting attention for its fast-paced and competitive nature.

Having overcome two opponents ranked significantly higher in the world standings, the Kenyans have demonstrated that rankings alone do not determine outcomes on the court.

Their next challenge will be to carry the same confidence, teamwork and fighting spirit into the semifinals as they pursue a historic achievement at the Games.
