Nyamira County is expanding investment in digital learning, with plans to establish two additional ICT hubs before June 2027.

The county also targets at least 500 young people for advanced practical training to equip them with skills for employment in the growing digital economy.

Governor Amos Nyaribo announced the expansion on Wednesday during the graduation of 71 trainees under the County Digital Empowerment Programme at the Nyamira County ICT Hub.

He said the programme was helping unemployed young people acquire skills that could enable them to earn an income through digital jobs locally and internationally.

“Digital learning gives you an opportunity to start by earning something. Even if you are at university, digital jobs can give you pocket money. Take up these jobs,” Nyaribo said.

The governor said two additional ICT hubs would be opened before June 2027 to increase access to training across the county.

He also announced plans to facilitate at least 500 young people to undertake one-year advanced practical training, in a move aimed at strengthening their skills and improving their prospects in the digital labour market.

The expansion builds on the county’s existing ICT hub programme, which has offered training in areas including online writing, digital entrepreneurship, online marketing and basic digital skills.

Previous county graduations have also featured courses in web development, graphic design, cybersecurity, virtual assistance and content writing.

The initiative comes as Kenya steps up efforts to position young people for opportunities in the global digital economy.

The national government launched a Digital Outsourcing Jobs initiative in May 2026 to equip young people with market-driven skills and connect them to international outsourcing opportunities.

At the graduation ceremony, Nyaribo also announced that the county would revive its secondary school scholarship programme from January 2027, targeting 300 bright but needy learners.

“From January (2027), we will take 300 poor but bright students to join secondary school,” he said.

The governor said the previous scholarship programme had enabled disadvantaged learners to access secondary education, but was suspended following the transition to the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system as the county worked on a legal framework aligned with the new education structure.

Nyamira had been supporting 751 secondary school students through full scholarships before the programme was halted.

Nyaribo said the scholarships were intended to widen access to education and give beneficiaries an opportunity to improve their families’ circumstances.

“We are creating equal opportunities and building an equal society,” he said.

The ceremony was held at the county headquarters and was attended by Nyamira County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo, a representative from Kisii University, among others.
