Kisii Governor Simba Arati has defended members of the Kazi Mashinani Green Army against claims linking the initiative to goonism.
Arati said the beneficiaries were hardworking residents seeking to earn a living and provide for their families.

Speaking at the Kisii Agricultural Training Centre (ATC) during the launch of the third cohort of the Kazi Mashinani Green Army, the governor urged critics to respect people who were genuinely working to make a living.
He said the scarcity of employment opportunities in the country required county governments to create initiatives that could engage young people and keep them away from crime.
“Kazi Mashinani provides an opportunity for our people, especially the youth, to earn an income while contributing to the cleanliness of their communities,” Arati said.
The programme operates on a monthly rotational basis, with each beneficiary receiving Sh10,000 per month.
Arati said such initiatives were necessary to address unemployment while improving the environment across Kisii County.
