Kenya will use the opening match of the Raila Odinga International Stadium to test its capacity to host major international sporting events ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The January 5, 2027 match will pit European football giants FC Bayern Munich against Ajax Amsterdam, in what Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya described as an opportunity to demonstrate Kenya’s event-management capabilities.

The fixture will mark the opening of the stadium, also known as Talanta Sports City, and is expected to attract international attention.

Mvurya said the high-profile encounter would provide the country with an opportunity to assess its preparedness for hosting major competitions, with the experience expected to inform preparations for next year’s continental football tournament.

Event management capacity

The Cabinet Secretary said the match would offer an international platform while allowing Kenya to test critical arrangements ahead of AFCON 2027.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) is expected to use the event to assess preparations in areas including visa processing, transport, hospitality, branding, broadcasting, ticketing, security and crowd management.

The match is also expected to give organisers an opportunity to identify operational gaps and address them before Kenya hosts Africa’s biggest football tournament.

Mvurya said the Bayern Munich-Ajax encounter was already generating positive international attention, helping strengthen Kenya’s profile as a sports destination.

AFCON preparations gather pace

The CS spoke during a meeting with members of the Local Organising Committee for the 2027 AFCON at his Talanta Plaza office in Nairobi.

He was accompanied by Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, Administrative Secretary Josephine Aoko, LOC chairman Nicholas Musonye, chief executive Antony Lungaho and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) acting secretary-general Dennis Gicheru, among other government officials.

The meeting comes as Kenya steps up preparations for the continental tournament, which it will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

The opening fixture at Talanta Sports City is expected to provide an important opportunity to demonstrate the country’s readiness to deliver major sporting events while putting its new sporting infrastructure to the test.
