Their preparations have centred on refining wrestling techniques, sharpening tactical awareness and building the confidence needed to compete against opponents from different countries.
The team’s technical staff have expressed confidence in their readiness, citing the hard work, discipline and commitment demonstrated throughout the training period.
The athletes, meanwhile, have been encouraged to believe in themselves, learn from their opponents and make the most of the opportunity to represent Kenya.
Mental preparation takes centre stage
Beyond physical conditioning, the team’s preparations have placed emphasis on the mental wellbeing of the young athletes, recognising the pressure, anxiety and fear of failure that can accompany international competition.
The team’s psychologist said the focus was on equipping the athletes with practical skills to build resilience, manage stress and maintain concentration during competition.
Techniques including box breathing, mindfulness and taking appropriate breaks are being used to help them remain calm and focused.
The wider support team, comprising coaches, psychologists, nutritionists and physiotherapists, is also providing assistance to safeguard the athletes’ physical and emotional wellbeing.
The psychologist emphasised that despite preparing for high-level competition, the athletes are still children who need support, encouragement and the freedom to enjoy their sporting journey.
The message to the two is to compete, enjoy the experience, believe in themselves and give their best.
Beyond Kenya’s traditional sporting strengths
Kenya has built an international reputation in athletics, but the participation of Nyatuka and Wanjala in beach wrestling offers an opportunity to showcase the country’s emerging talent in other sporting disciplines.
The Games will provide the two athletes with an opportunity to gain international experience, test their abilities against peers from other countries and contribute to the growth of wrestling in Kenya.
As they prepare to enter the competition arena, the emphasis remains on discipline, confidence, sportsmanship and delivering their best performances while embracing the experience of representing their country.
Team Kenya is looking forward to seeing the two athletes fly the national flag and inspire other young people to pursue their sporting ambitions.
