Kibet, who currently serves as KenGen’s General Manager for Commercial Services, will assume the substantive position on February 1, 2027, following a transition period intended to facilitate an orderly handover.
The company’s board said the appointment followed a rigorous and competitive recruitment process, expressing confidence in Kibet’s ability to steer the electricity generator through its next phase of growth.
In a statement, the board said Kibet brings more than 17 years of experience in geothermal development, project delivery, commercial strategy and business growth.
“His career combines engineering expertise with commercial leadership, with contributions to renewable energy development, the expansion of international consultancy services and the advancement of the Olkaria Green Energy Park,” the board said.
At KenGen, Kibet oversees Energy Markets, Investments, New Business and Partnerships, Marketing and Corporate Communication, and Sustainability.
His appointment comes as the company continues to pursue business diversification and expand its geothermal expertise and consultancy services beyond Kenya.
Kibet holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Telecommunication and Information Engineering and a Master of Science in Project Management, both from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
He is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and SAP Project System Consultant. His executive training includes the Organisational Leadership programme at Harvard Business School, as well as programmes at IESE Business School in Spain, the University of Cape Town and Strathmore Business School.
He is affiliated with the Engineers Board of Kenya, the Institution of Engineers of Kenya and the Geothermal Association of Kenya. He is also a recipient of the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW).
The board paid tribute to outgoing CEO Njenga, crediting his leadership with strengthening KenGen’s financial performance and advancing its diversification strategy.
During his tenure, the company recorded a profit after tax of KSh10.48 billion in the 2024/2025 financial year and expanded its geothermal consultancy portfolio, including assignments in Eswatini.
“We thank him for his contribution to KenGen’s growth and wish him a fulfilling retirement,” the board said.
The directors said they expected Kibet to build on the achievements of his predecessor, strengthen performance and promote innovation and sustainable value creation.
The appointment was announced by Company Secretary FCS Austin Ouko on behalf of the board.
