Sawe made history by clocking 1:59:30 to set a world marathon record, becoming the first man to officially break the two-hour barrier in a competitive marathon.
His performance has now earned him a place among the season’s most memorable sporting moments, with fans voting through the official World Athletics application to determine the finalists.
World Athletics said the new award was introduced to recognise “the most memorable occasion of the season” that goes beyond an individual performance to inspire and generate emotions among athletics fans across the world.
Botswana’s men’s 4x400m relay victory at the World Athletics Relays, staged on home soil, is the second finalist, while Kerr’s world mile record of 3:42.66 in London completes the shortlist.
The winner will be announced live during the World Athletics Awards in Monaco on November 29.
Other honours to be presented at the ceremony include the men’s and women’s World Athlete of the Year awards, Rising Star honours, Coach of the Year and the President’s Award.
Sawe’s nomination adds to an outstanding season for the Kenyan, whose record-breaking run has strengthened his place among the leading figures in world distance running.
