Kipchumba Murkomen and Douglas Kanja.

The government has stepped up efforts to address a surge in security challenges across the country, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen told lawmakers on Tuesday during a high-level briefing to Parliament.

Murkomen, accompanied by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Mohamed Amin, appeared before the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security to outline the state of national security and measures being taken to contain emerging threats.

The CS said the country continues to grapple with a complex mix of security risks, including banditry in the North Rift, terrorism threats in the North Eastern and coastal regions, and the rise of organised criminal gangs in urban areas.

“Kenya continues to face both persistent and emerging threats that require a coordinated, multi-agency response,” Murkomen told the committee.

He noted that the situation is further worsened by politically motivated violence, the spread of illicit alcohol and drug abuse, and the proliferation of illegal firearms.

“These factors continue to strain our security resources and complicate enforcement efforts,” he added.

In response, the government has intensified operations in affected areas, including deploying additional police officers and specialised investigative units, while embracing intelligence-led and technology-driven policing.

Murkomen revealed that plans are underway to establish regional command centres in major towns, alongside a national command hub, to boost surveillance and coordination.

“We are enhancing rapid response capabilities and strengthening collaboration between national and county governments to improve overall preparedness,” he said.

The CS also underscored the role of public participation in shaping security interventions, citing the Jukwaa kwa Usalama platform as a key feedback mechanism.

Meanwhile, the National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the country, saying it remains “resolute and unwavering” in protecting lives and property through improved coordination and optimal use of resources.

The meeting comes amid growing concern over insecurity in parts of the country, with lawmakers seeking accountability and clarity on the government’s strategy to restore stability.
