Health authorities in Wajir County have isolated a patient in Habaswein after he developed severe febrile illness following recent travel from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The 20-year-old man, a resident of Habaswein, is currently admitted at Albadar Nursing Home after presenting with fever, headache and cough.

A disease surveillance report from Habaswein indicates that the patient was found to have severe anaemia, with a haemoglobin level of 4g/dL, at a private health facility.

Authorities are investigating the case as a suspected viral haemorrhagic fever, although laboratory confirmation is still pending.

The patient reportedly told health officials that he had recently travelled to the DRC, where he worked as a “tan boy” on a cargo truck or trailer.

According to the report, he developed fever and headache while still in the DRC on September 2, 2026.

He subsequently travelled by trailer from the DRC to Uganda, where he stayed for about five days and sought medical attention. He was treated with antibiotics and painkillers before travelling to Malaba.

From Malaba, he travelled to Nairobi by trailer and then proceeded by bus to Isiolo, where he stayed for approximately 10 days.

He was later transported to Habaswein by a Probox vehicle, arriving at about September 20.

Upon arrival in Habaswein, the patient sought treatment at Hilac Medical Clinic, where he was managed for pneumonia and septicaemia for about three days.

However, his condition did not improve, prompting his transfer to Albadar Nursing Home, where he remains admitted.

The report indicates that he is currently receiving intravenous Augmentin and paracetamol and has received two units of whole blood.

Despite the interventions, health officials said the patient remains clinically unwell and sick-looking.

“The patient is currently isolated,” the report states.

Health authorities have completed collection of samples from the patient, with the specimen scheduled to be shipped to the National Public Health Laboratories (NPHVL) for testing.

Meanwhile, contact listing and identification are ongoing as authorities seek to establish people who may have had contact with the patient during his journey and after his arrival in Habaswein.

The sub-county security team is also monitoring the situation as health officials continue with investigations.

Authorities have not confirmed that the patient has a viral haemorrhagic fever, and laboratory results will be required to establish the cause of his illness.
