The government has launched a training programme targeting assessors and verifiers for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
This is a process used to identify and certify a candidate’s competencies regardless of when, where, and how they acquired the skills against prescribed standards or learning outcomes.

Principal Secretary for State Department of Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Dr. Esther Muoria launched the programme at Kisii National Polytechnic on Tuesday.
“The government has started to recognize informal skills through the implementation of Recognition of Prior Learning,” Dr Mworia said.
The PS said that RPL seeks to bridge the gap between education qualification and hard-earned skills.
It also seeks to promote inclusivity.
She revealed that through the implementation of RPL in Kenya, individuals with informal skills will have an opportunity to be assessed and issued with certificates in their various areas of skill.
“This will present them with an opportunity to access government tenders, as well as employment both locally, regionally and globally.”

She also hinted that once one gets certified through RPL, the individual will also have an opportunity to further his studies in the area of skill specialization.
Targeted groups largely consist of workers in the informal sector who posses exemplary competencies in what they do but are not certified.
This includes refugees, asylum seekers, and school dropouts.
