West Mugirango MP Stephen Mogaka now wants the government to outline its readiness for the upcoming cyclical wet season in the country.
Mogaka singled out the Lake Victoria rain belt, citing the recurrent devastation caused by heavy rainfall, flooding and stormwater.

In a statement tabled before the National Assembly Wednesday, Mogaka requested a response from the Departmental Committee on Regional Development.
He sought clarity on measures put in place to mitigate the anticipated adverse effects of the rains expected soon as forecasted by experts.
“Residents of the Lake Victoria rain belt, including those in West Mugirango, suffer immense losses of property and lives during the rainy seasons.
Despite budgetary allocations for emergency and humanitarian responses, there has been no significant permanent intervention to prevent and mitigate the impact of these recurrent disasters,” the legislator stated.
Mogaka said government should make public those measures put in place to ensure timely and effective early warnings about hazardous weather for residents to make suitable responses.
He also wants a detailed report on emergency interventions, including pre-positioning of relief supplies.
Also, there should be long-term mitigation strategies such as climate adaptation and flood control infrastructure.
The vocal first time legislator also wants the country to be made aware of public education initiatives to equip residents with knowledge on disaster management to enhance resilience.

He called on the government to take proactive measures.
“It is crucial that we move beyond reactive emergency response and implement sustainable solutions to protect lives and livelihoods,” Mogaka said.
The statement was referred to the relevant parliamentary committee for deliberation, with expectations that the government will provide a comprehensive response in the coming days.
