Garbage collection has been a challenge within Kisii Municipality for a long time and now a worthwhile intervention has been found.
This follows the launch of two garbage haulage tractors that will offer efficient and reliable waste collection.

Speaking during the launch of the tractors at the County headquarters, Governor Simba Arati indicated that the acquisition of the machines was part of his administration’s “wider plan of equipping all the nine Sub-Counties with the same machinery for proper solid-waste management.
“He expressed optimism that the intervention is going to enhance public health, safety, and environmental conservation.
“We want to make sure that all the waste that emanates from our institutions and residential places is disposed properly not only for the sake of our public health good but also be turned into a form of an income generating activity,” Arati said.
The tractors are expected to be game-changer for a town struggling to keep its streets clean, as these powerful machines can efficiently collect and transport large amounts of waste to designated disposal sites.
By investing in these tractors, the town can significantly reduce the time and labor required for garbage collection, allowing sanitation workers to focus on other tasks.
Governor Arati disclosed that the County has established a Ksh.15 million Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at the Agricultural Training Centre (ATC) that will facilitate the sorting, separation and recycling of waste.
Already, the facility has produced farm manure with good soil nutrients for agricultural production as compared to processed fertilizers.
He called on farmers in need of the manure to register and pick the commodity from the production base at no cost.
He also indicated that soon, garbage collection bins will be strategically located in towns.
Each of the bins will be specifically marked to carry designated waste types.
“The garbage bins will be properly categorised; plastic waste, glass and food remnants,” Arati said.
Further, he urged residents to adhere to protocols outlined in waste disposal.
The Governor warned those contravening disposal procedures of dire consequences.
He said the county government is shortly establishing a municipal court to deal with such and related offences.
