The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has revamped the Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) and asked journalists to try their luck this year.
The annual ritual seeks to recognise outstanding journalism in the country.

“The Council wants to reward quality journalism, no matter the platform,” MCK’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Omwoyo said.
“Good journalism crosses platforms.”
There will be one winner in each category for television, radio, print, and digital/online platforms.
The advent and fast embrace of online content in the country has widened the media space in recent years.
MCK seeks to encourage meaningful storytelling and raise the standards in the country, making AJEA highly coveted by journalists.
Omwoyo said special categories for emerging issues, such as the Tourism Reporting, National Cohesion and Animal Welfare Award had been introduced.
The other categories include Governance Reporting, Gender Reporting, Best Radio Production, Best TV Production, Health Reporting, Sports Reporting, Agriculture Reporting.
He emphasized the role of editors and sub-editors in ensuring that stories meet editorial standards.
“Guide reporters, follow ethical rules, and make sure the context of stories is clear,” he told editors.
The CEO thanked journalists for their hard work despite the challenges confronting them and the industry.
Accredited journalists in Kenya are allowed to submit their stories by the end of February.
The stories should have been published between February 1, 2024, and January 31, 2025.
AJEA is a major event for MCK, and celebrates outstanding journalism in Kenya’s media industry.
The awards ceremony crowns the World Press Freedom Day activities which happen on May 3.
Winners take home cash, trophies and certificates.
They obtain scholarships for training, and enhance their profiles.
A call for submission shows that journalists can submit their stories in print, broadcast, or digital formats.
The stories should be in English, Kiswahili, or any vernacular language in Kenya.
