Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has launched a green patient transport system to improve movement and access to care within the facility.

The initiative includes two electric patient transport golf carts and a fourth ambulance, strengthening the hospital’s capacity to move patients safely and efficiently between service points.

The electric carts will primarily assist elderly patients, children, persons with disabilities and others who have difficulty walking between departments, clinics and other areas of the hospital.

They will also transport patients arriving at the hospital to appropriate service points and assist those being discharged who may require help reaching the hospital gate to access public transport.

The initiative was officially flagged off by JOOTRH Board Chair Dr Charles Olang’o Onudi, who said improving the patient experience should remain central to healthcare delivery.

The hospital’s chief executive officer, Dr Joshua Clinton Okise, said the transport system would make movement within the facility more convenient and safer for patients and their caregivers.

The addition of the fourth ambulance is expected to enhance JOOTRH’s emergency response and patient transfer capacity, enabling faster movement of patients requiring ambulance services.

The electric carts also introduce an environmentally friendly transport option within the hospital, reducing reliance on conventional fuel-powered vehicles and their associated emissions.

The initiative forms part of JOOTRH’s efforts to improve patient-centred care and strengthen access to specialised medical services, while addressing practical challenges patients and caregivers face when navigating the hospital.
