The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) and the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) have strengthened their partnership in a move aimed at enhancing sports journalism and improving media coverage of Team Kenya at major international competitions.

The renewed collaboration was agreed upon during a high-level meeting between the leadership of the two organisations, where discussions centred on transparency, professionalism and structured engagement between sports administrators and journalists.

A key outcome of the meeting was an agreement to involve SJAK in the nomination of media personnel who will accompany Team Kenya to international events, including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Winter Olympics and Youth Olympic Games.

NOCK President Shadrack Maluki said the arrangement would help strengthen transparency and foster closer cooperation between sports administrators and the media.

“After a meeting with the SJAK top brass today, we have agreed that by virtue of the Association being the umbrella body of all sports journalists in the country, they would be involved in nominating the Media Liaison and possible Media Team of Team Kenya in all NOCK events,” said Maluki.

He added that the move would help “promote transparency and forge a close working relationship with members of the Fourth Estate.”

The meeting also recognised the critical role sports journalists play in promoting sports, increasing public participation and showcasing Kenya’s sporting achievements on the global stage.

SJAK President James Waindi welcomed the renewed partnership, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening collaboration between Kenya’s sports movement and the media fraternity.

“This partnership reflects the mutual respect that exists between NOCK and SJAK. Sports journalists are not merely reporters of events; they are critical stakeholders in the growth of sport,” said Waindi.

He noted that institutionalising structured engagement and transparent processes would enhance confidence among journalists while ensuring Team Kenya benefits from professional and coordinated media coverage at major global competitions.

SJAK Secretary General Moses Wakhisi said the agreement underscored the importance of dialogue and strategic partnerships in building stronger sports institutions.

“As the Executive, we remain committed to opening more doors, strengthening relationships with key stakeholders, and ensuring that opportunities are pursued through transparent and accountable processes,” said Wakhisi.

The partnership comes as Kenya intensifies preparations for upcoming international sporting assignments, with both organisations expressing confidence that closer collaboration will enhance accountability, raise the profile of athletes and ensure fans receive credible and timely sports information.
