Residents of Nyamira County’s Kiabonyoru Ward and neighbouring areas will soon access expanded healthcare services following plans to upgrade Mokomoni Health Centre to a Level 4 Hospital.
The proposed upgrade is expected to transform the facility into a major referral centre serving Kiabonyoru, Itibo, Mekenene and surrounding wards.

It will also support the healthcare needs of students expected to enroll at the upcoming Nyamira University, not far from the health facility’s location.
Governor Amos Nyaribo said the move is part of his administration’s commitment to decentralising quality healthcare services and ensuring residents can access specialised treatment closer to home.
“Elevation of Mokomoni Health Centre in Kiabonyoru Ward to a Level 4 Hospital will bring quality and specialised services to the people of the area and the surrounding wards of Itibo, Mekenene, among others,” the governor said.
According to Nyaribo, the county government plans to install a modern theatre, a mother-and-child unit, orthopaedic services and other specialised departments required of a Level 4 facility.
“In this regard, my Administration will install a theatre, a mother and child unit, orthopaedic and other specialised and comprehensive services befitting a Level 4 facility,” he said.
The governor noted that the upgraded hospital will also act as a key referral centre for lower-level health facilities in the region.
“It will serve as a nerve referral hospital for Level 3 and Level 2 facilities in the area, effectively decongesting traffic from Nyamira County Referral Hospital,” he added.
The announcement comes as county governments across the country intensify efforts to strengthen primary healthcare and improve access to specialised treatment under the Universal Health Coverage agenda.
Healthcare remains one of the flagship sectors under Nyaribo’s administration, which has in recent years invested in the construction and equipping of health facilities, recruitment of medical personnel and expansion of essential services across Nyamira County.
The planned upgrade is also expected to spur economic growth in the Mokomoni area by attracting medical professionals, increasing demand for local businesses and supporting the anticipated growth of Nyamira University.
Residents have long called for enhanced medical services in the region, with many forced to travel long distances to access specialised treatment at Nyamira County Referral Hospital and facilities outside the county.
Nyaribo said the project aligns with his broader vision of taking critical services closer to wananchi.
“This is in line with my promise of devolving and delivering quality healthcare to the grassroots, supporting universal access to health services,” he said.
Once completed, the facility is expected to significantly reduce referral burdens, improve emergency response and bring specialised healthcare within reach of thousands of residents in the western part of Nyamira County.
