Preparations have been finalized for the inaugural Lake Victoria Day celebrations, which will take place from May 18 to 21, 2026 in Mwanza, Tanzania.
The four-day event will be held at the Nane Nane Grounds in Mwanza City and is being organized by the Lake Victoria Basin Commission in partnership with the Government of the Tanzania.

The celebrations are expected to attract senior government officials and dignitaries from member states of the East African Community (EAC).
This year’s theme, “Shared Waters, Shared Future: Uniting for a Sustainable Lake Victoria Basin,” focuses on the shared responsibility of protecting Lake Victoria while promoting inclusive economic development across the region.
Organizers say the theme also highlights the growing importance of the blue economy and climate resilience in safeguarding the future of the basin.
The event will feature exhibitions and demonstrations of innovations and technologies in environmental conservation, fisheries, renewable energy, pollution control and waste management.
Special attention will be given to projects led by youth and women.
Organizers say the celebrations are also aimed at encouraging local communities to participate in environmental conservation and sustainable livelihood programmes, while helping mobilize partnerships and resources for ongoing and future projects coordinated by the LVBC.
Activities lined up include school essay and art competitions, as well as community clean-up exercises along Mwanza’s lakeshore. Similar activities are expected to take place in other EAC countries bordering Lake Victoria.
Dignitaries attending the celebrations will also lead symbolic clean-up and tree-planting exercises to encourage collective responsibility in protecting the lake and its surrounding environment.
Between May 17 and 21, Mwanza will host exhibitions and an innovation fair bringing together EAC Partner States, private sector players, research institutions and civil society groups.
The exhibitions will showcase innovations in fisheries management, renewable energy, pollution control and waste management, with recognition set aside for youth- and women-led solutions.
Cultural performances from different EAC countries will also form part of the celebrations to promote regional unity and cultural diversity.
Local artisans and small businesses are expected to display environmentally friendly products and crafts to support sustainable tourism and community livelihoods.
A two-day Stakeholders’ Forum scheduled for May 18 and 19 will bring together civil society organizations, NGOs, utility providers, youth groups, women’s organizations and other stakeholders to discuss challenges and opportunities affecting Lake Victoria and to propose priority actions.
The forum will be followed by a donor roundtable meeting involving development partners.
The LVBC is also expected to present its achievements, ongoing programmes, policy frameworks and progress on the development of Strategic Plan V.
The main event on May 21 will include a High-Level Ministerial Segment led by a Guest of Honour from Tanzania.
Ministers responsible for water, environment, fisheries, maritime affairs and EAC matters from all partner states are expected to attend.
During the session, recommendations from the Stakeholders’ Forum will be presented before ministers sign a Joint Ministerial Communiqué reaffirming their commitment to sustainable management of Lake Victoria and the wider basin.
The inaugural celebration will also witness the launch of two major regional initiatives — the Lake Victoria Basin Water Information System (LVB-WIS) and the State of the Basin Report (SoBR).
According to organizers, the LVB-WIS will serve as a regional platform for sharing hydrological, environmental and socio-economic data to support evidence-based planning, monitoring and coordinated decision-making among partner states.
The State of the Basin Report will provide the first comprehensive assessment of the basin’s ecological condition, climate threats, water resources and development trends, offering guidance for policy development, investment planning and long-term sustainability efforts.
The establishment of Lake Victoria Day was approved during the 23rd Ordinary Meeting of the Sectoral Council on the Lake Victoria Basin as part of efforts to create a dedicated regional platform for promoting sustainable management of Lake Victoria.
