Siaya County governor James Orengo, has raised alarm over what he terms as an “abrupt and unprocedural” withdrawal of his personal and residential security detail by the National Police Service.
In a strongly worded protest seen by KPC on Wednesday addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Orengo condemned the move, stating that his security detail and officers stationed at his Nairobi residence were withdrawn on Tuesday, May 19, without prior notification, formal communication, or provision of replacements.

“The sudden, unprovoked withdrawal of my entire personal security detail, as well as the security personnel assigned to my Nairobi residence, was executed abruptly, without prior notice, official communication, or the provision of any replacement,” Orengo said in a press release issued the same day.
The governor emphasized that the provision of security for state officers is not a privilege but a constitutional entitlement.
“As a state officer, the provision of security is not a favor, a luxury, or a political privilege. It is a constitutional right and a statutory entitlement anchored in the laws of Kenya to ensure the safety, stability, and uninterrupted service of public leadership,” he asserted.
Orengo has demanded an immediate explanation from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration and the Inspector General of Police regarding the grounds for the withdrawal.
He further called for the reinstatement or replacement of his official security detail at all designated stations, including his Nairobi residence.
Despite the setback, the governor assured the public of his continued commitment to service. “We continue to do our work with enthusiasm and patriotism,” he noted.
The letter was copied to the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, the Chairperson of the Council of Governors, and the County Police Commander in Siaya.
