What began as a promise made during an emotional funeral in Birongo Ward, Nyaribari Chache, has turned into a renewed source of hope for a grieving family in Kisii County.
A week after the burial of Justine Nyang’au, his family continues to express gratitude after parliamentary aspirant Okeng’o Nyambane fulfilled his pledge to support one of the late Nyang’au’s children through school.

Speaking at the family’s Nyang’eni home, relatives said many leaders often make emotional promises during burials, only for the commitments to disappear once mourners leave. This time, however, they said things were different.
According to the family, Okeng’o paid school fees for the orphaned child for the entire year and also provided shopping to cater for her immediate needs.
Divinah Moraa, widow of the late Nyang’au, said the gesture brought relief during one of the most difficult periods for the family.
After losing her husband, who was the sole breadwinner, she feared her children could drop out of school due to financial hardship.
She said Okeng’o’s intervention restored hope and eased the burden the family had been carrying since the death.
Neighbours and local residents described the parliamentary aspirant as a compassionate leader whose actions reflected genuine concern for ordinary people.
“His actions have inspired hope among vulnerable families in Birongo Ward and across Nyaribari Chache,” said one neighbour.
Villagers praised him for demonstrating commitment through action rather than empty political promises, noting that it is rare for leaders to honour pledges made during emotional funeral gatherings.
Speaking after supporting the family, Okeng’o said leadership should go beyond politics and focus on standing with people during difficult moments.
He said he would continue supporting needy children and vulnerable families beyond political seasons, adding that education remains one of the most powerful tools for empowering the Kisii community and fighting poverty.
In many parts of the Kisii community, funerals have increasingly become political platforms where elected leaders and aspirants seek public goodwill and support.
During emotionally charged moments following the loss of a parent or guardian, politicians often pledge to educate orphaned children, build houses for bereaved families, or provide financial assistance.
