Residents of Itibo Ward in Nyamira County have been urged to take responsibility for protecting newly constructed roads to ensure they last longer and serve the community effectively.
Area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Lameck Onyacha called on locals to stop damaging roads by misusing construction materials such as gravel and sand.

He noted that some residents divert these materials to create access paths to their homes, weakening the roads and leaving them vulnerable to erosion during rains.
“As a result, we are forced to rebuild the same roads every year, which is a waste of public resources that could be used in other development sectors,” Onyacha said.
He emphasized the need for collective responsibility, warning that repeated reconstruction delays progress in key areas such as healthcare and education.
Area chief Paul Nchobera echoed the sentiments, saying funds spent on repeated road repairs could instead support critical services like hospitals.
“We cannot keep reconstructing roads annually while other essential services lack funding. Residents must take care of these projects,” he said.
Onyacha also assured residents of his active involvement in infrastructure projects, noting that he personally supervises road construction to ensure quality work.
“I am always present during construction to monitor progress and ensure standards are met,” he added.
Residents expressed optimism about ongoing works, with one woman from Getengereirie noting that the road in her area is nearing completion.
