President William Ruto has described Sebastian Sawe’s record-breaking marathon run in London as a “defining moment in the story of human endurance.”
Ruto placed the achievement alongside milestones such as Neil Armstrong’s moon landing and Roger Bannister’s four‑minute mile.

Speaking at State House Nairobi during a special reception for the new world marathon record holder, Ruto said: “Moments such as this are exceedingly rare. They come, perhaps, once in a generation; sometimes only once in a lifetime.”
Sawe stunned the world on April 26, 2026, by running a marathon in under two hours, a feat long considered impossible.
The President noted that the athlete had only entered marathon running two years ago, yet remained unbeaten since his debut in Valencia.
“You have done what many believed could not be done. You have made the impossible possible. And in doing so, you have inspired a nation and the world,” Ruto told him.
The Head of State emphasized that Sawe’s victory extends Kenya’s dominance in distance running, recalling the lineage of record holders from Patrick Makau to the late Kelvin Kiptum.
He said Kenya’s athletes remain “among our finest ambassadors, projecting the very best of our nation to the world.”
Beyond celebrating Sawe’s triumph, Ruto outlined government measures to strengthen sports development.
He highlighted ongoing projects including Talanta Stadium, a 60,000‑seater set to host AFCON 2027, renovations of Kasarani and Nyayo stadia, and the construction of 25 additional facilities nationwide.
He also cited a new lease agreement for a modern Arena and Entertainment District in Nairobi’s CBD, positioning the capital as a regional hub for sports and culture.
Grassroots initiatives are also underway, with Constituency Sports Academies designed to nurture young talent.
The President announced enhanced rewards for athletes, including KSh3 million for gold medalists in athletics and increased daily allowances when representing Kenya abroad.
“Excellence like this does not happen by chance; it must be supported, nurtured, and sustained,” he said.
“You have reminded us that what once seemed impossible is within reach if only we dare to believe in ourselves and pursue our highest aspirations with courage, consistency, and resolve.”
