A Kenyan man has died in the United Kingdom after he was struck by a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

Peter Omwansa Ogwaka was hit by the lorry on Progress Road at about midday on Wednesday, according to information shared by The Kenyan Diaspora Media.

Emergency services were called to the scene following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian. Mr Ogwaka was later pronounced dead.

A section of the A127 was closed for about seven hours as officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit examined the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

Essex Police said the lorry driver had not been arrested in connection with the incident.

The death has left Mr Ogwaka’s family and friends in shock, with arrangements for his funeral and burial now under way.

A WhatsApp group has been formed to coordinate support for the bereaved family, while a GoFundMe fundraiser has been launched by his wife, Sheila Ogwoka, to help meet funeral and burial expenses.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.

The death adds to concerns over the safety of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users on Britain’s busy roads, although police have not indicated that any particular factor was responsible for the crash.

Mr Ogwaka’s family and friends are expected to provide further details on funeral arrangements as preparations for his send-off continue.
