Swamibapa A have strengthened their grip on the Nairobi County Cricket Association (NCCA) Super Division 50-Overs League title after completing a home-and-away double over defending champions Ruaraka A, opening an eight-point lead with three match-days remaining.

Swamibapa beat Ruaraka by six wickets at Ruaraka Sports Club Ground on Sunday to move to 44 points, leaving their closest challengers, Ruaraka and Sir Ali A, on 36 points each.

The result puts Swamibapa within touching distance of the title, with two more victories enough to seal it, while Ruaraka must win all their remaining matches and hope the leaders falter.

Swamibapa’s next assignment is against fellow title contenders Sir Ali A at Jamhuri High School.

Dhwanil and Gill rescue Swamibapa

Ruaraka won the toss and elected to bat but were bowled out for 218 in 47.1 overs in a stop-start innings that struggled to gather momentum.

Captain Nitish Hirani fell leg before wicket to Sachin Gill for one off nine balls, but Chandresh Hirani counter-attacked with 48 off 51 balls, hitting six fours and a six while adding valuable runs with Satyalaksha Jain.

Ajay Hirani was then bowled by Peter Koech for a three-ball duck.

Jain provided the backbone of the innings, scoring 63 off 86 balls, including nine boundaries, during a 119-minute stay at the crease before being caught and bowled by Onkar Haresh Jadhav.

Morris Ouma contributed 15 off 32 balls, Omkar Ghule made 18 off 21, while Dhruva Patel supplied late impetus with 44 off 50 balls, including four fours and two sixes.

Pankaj Bhudia made seven, Purshotam Vekariya five and Rinkesh Vekariya three, while extras contributed 14 runs.

Jadhav was the pick of the Swamibapa attack with four wickets for 42 runs from his 10 overs. Koech claimed two for 42, Paresh Kerai took two wickets, while Gill finished with two for 38.

Swamibapa, however, made heavy weather of the chase after a promising start.

Rushabh Patel struck 42 off 42 balls, including eight fours, while Prashang Hirani added 24 off 34 balls. But Nitish Hirani produced a superb spell of four for 36 in 10 overs to put Ruaraka back in contention.

He dismissed Rushabh Patel, caught by Chandresh, Prashang, caught by Satyalaksha, Jignesh Hirani, the Swamibapa captain, caught by Satyalaksha for two, and Jadhav leg before wicket for a golden duck.

Swamibapa slumped from 59 for one to 71 for four within a couple of overs.

Dhwanil Patel and Gill then changed the course of the match, putting together an unbeaten 148-run partnership to take Swamibapa home without further loss.

Dhwanil finished unbeaten on 83 off 105 balls, hitting eight fours and three sixes during a 147-minute stay at the crease, while Gill was unbeaten on 63 off 87 balls with five fours.

The defeat was Ruaraka’s fourth in 13 matches and completed a miserable double against Swamibapa, who had also beaten them in the first meeting of the season.
