The championships, running from October 21 to 25, are expected to boost sports tourism, support local businesses and showcase Kisumu as a destination for major sporting events.
Speaking during the flag-off on Wednesday, Mvurya said the competition offered economic opportunities beyond the sporting arena, particularly for businesses in the hospitality, transport and tourism sectors.
“The event is positioning Kisumu as a leading sports tourism destination by stimulating local economic activities,” Mvurya said in a Facebook post.
He said the championships would serve as a catalyst for economic growth, destination marketing and community development, while giving visitors an opportunity to experience the region’s tourism attractions.
The CS called on Kisumu residents to turn out in large numbers to support the competitors and welcome visiting delegations.
“I therefore call upon the people of Kisumu to embrace this championship, turn out in large numbers, cheer on the competitors and extend our renowned Kenyan hospitality to the visiting delegations,” he said.
Family fun ride planned
Mvurya said the championships would also provide an opportunity for residents to participate in activities beyond the elite competition, with a Family Fun Ride scheduled for Saturday morning.
“With the Family Fun Ride scheduled for Saturday morning, there is something for everyone to enjoy as we celebrate the spirit of cycling and community participation,” he said.
The event brings together cyclists from across the continent, placing Kisumu at the centre of African road cycling for five days.
Organisers and local stakeholders are expected to benefit from increased visitor activity, with accommodation providers, restaurants, transport operators and other businesses positioned to serve athletes, officials, supporters and other visitors.
The championships are also an opportunity to promote Kenya’s capacity to host international sporting events while strengthening the link between sports, tourism and local economic development.
