Sorobi Moturi Erastus.

For two decades, Sorobi Moturi Erastus has done what few broadcasters manage to sustain over time — remain relevant, relatable and memorable while continuing to evolve with changing audiences.

The celebrated radio presenter now working for Egesa FM marked 20 years in broadcasting in the company of friends, leaders, creatives and media personalities on Wednesday night.

The ceremony at a Nairobi hotel was more than a celebration of longevity as it also marked the official launch of the Sorobi Mentorship Academy, a new initiative aimed at nurturing and guiding emerging talent in the creative and media space.

Among those paying tribute was Senator Essy Okenyuri, who reflected on Sorobi’s journey as one defined not just by entertainment but by impact.

“For two decades, Sorobi has used his voice not only to entertain but also to educate, inspire and shape conversation in our society,” she said.

For many listeners, Sorobi’s name immediately brings back memories of his widely loved Egesa FM segment, “Kemanyi Mo Ogosoro na Mochokorori Bwo Okinyi.”

Through humour, vivid storytelling and everyday experiences, the show built a connection that cut across generations.

Okenyuri noted that what made the segment stand out was its unusual balance of laughter and learning.

“Many will particularly remember that famous segment because it blended humour, storytelling and deep societal lessons in a way that resonated with both the young and the old,” she said.

Okenyuri added that behind the jokes and captivating narration was always something deeper.

“Beyond the jokes and captivating narration was a powerful educational message that challenged people to think differently while still keeping them entertained”

Over the years, Sorobi has interviewed hundreds of people, an undertaking that has made them and the world a better place.

That ability to communicate serious messages without losing warmth became one of Sorobi’s trademarks and helped cement his place in regional broadcasting.

Yet the anniversary also reflected another side of his journey — adaptation.

As the media landscape changed, Sorobi expanded into digital spaces through podcasting and mentorship, demonstrating that relevance is built through growth rather than nostalgia.

His newly launched academy now seeks to transfer that experience to younger creatives.

“The launch of the Mentorship Academy is particularly commendable because it reflects a commitment to raising a new generation of creatives equipped with practical skills, discipline and meaningful opportunities,” Okenyuri said.
