Women professionals in Kenya’s healthcare sector have launched a new caucus aimed at strengthening networking, mentorship and professional development while advancing women’s leadership in the industry.
The caucus was unveiled during a dinner event officiated by Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, who challenged women in the sector to champion reforms that strengthen primary healthcare and improve health outcomes at the community level.
Bringing together women from academia, government, healthcare institutions, nursing, community health promotion and business, the caucus is anchored on five key pillars: leadership and mentorship; technology and innovation; women for primary healthcare; health and gender; and policy, research and advocacy.
Organisers said the platform will serve as a hub for knowledge sharing, collaboration and professional growth, creating opportunities for members to build stronger networks and enhance their influence both nationally and internationally.
Speaking during the event, PS Muthoni urged women to take advantage of educational and professional development opportunities provided by the government to advance their careers and increase their representation in leadership positions.
She noted that while women account for more than 70 per cent of the healthcare workforce, they remain underrepresented in decision-making and leadership roles.
World Medical Association President Dr Jacqueline Kitulu, who co-hosted the event alongside PS Muthoni, said the caucus would help unlock opportunities for women across the healthcare ecosystem through collaboration and mentorship.
She emphasized the importance of women supporting one another and creating pathways for career advancement, research and leadership.
Dr Kitulu also highlighted the need to prioritise mental wellness, noting that many healthcare professionals struggle to achieve a healthy work-life balance due to the demanding nature of their work.
Participants were further encouraged to challenge societal barriers that continue to limit women’s full participation and advancement in the healthcare sector.
The launch of the caucus marks a significant step towards strengthening women’s voices in healthcare leadership and advancing policies that promote equitable, inclusive and resilient health systems.
