Gusii-bred journalist and Press Club Chairperson Nyang’au Araka has earned national recognition for his impactful health reporting.

He emerged as the First Runner-Up in the Digital Media category at the inaugural Voices of Impact: HIV & STIs Reporting Media Awards 2026.

The prestigious national awards, organized by Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Kenya in partnership with the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC), celebrated journalists whose reporting has significantly advanced public awareness, advocacy, and understanding of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) across Kenya.

Araka, widely known by his satirical pen name “The Idler,” received the recognition for an award-winning story published on the Kisii Press Club website.

The honour reflects years of dedication to community-centred journalism that amplifies the voices of marginalized populations while addressing some of society’s most sensitive health issues.

The gala ceremony, held in Nairobi, brought together leading media professionals, health advocates, policymakers, and journalists from across the country.

The event underscored the growing importance of ethical, accurate, and evidence-based health reporting in combating stigma, misinformation, and barriers to healthcare access.

At the heart of Araka’s recognition was his compelling feature story, For Mothers with HIV, Cancer Is Another Fight, published on November 25, 2025.

The article chronicles the poignant and deeply human experiences of three women, including Josephine Wandii, a 48-year-old resident of Mwatate in Taita Taveta County who has spent years living with HIV and is now battling oesophageal cancer.

Combining powerful storytelling with original photographs he captured himself, Araka painted a vivid picture of Wandii’s daily reality.

One of the most striking images accompanying the story shows her holding a newly received solar bulb hanging from a wire inside her modest home.

“It is a good day for us; we received solar lighting in the morning, and now visitors have come to our home,” Wandii says in the story, expressing a rare moment of joy amid years of hardship.

Araka’s reporting carefully documents the environment surrounding her life. A single red bulb illuminates smoke-stained walls marked by age, poverty, and perseverance.

Through this imagery, Araka invites readers beyond statistics and medical terminology into the lived experiences of people navigating complex health challenges.

Wandii’s struggle intensified in 2014 when she was diagnosed with cancer while already living with HIV.

Despite the devastating diagnosis, she continued working tirelessly to support her family by selling charcoal and bananas while largely raising her four children on her own.

Earlier in 2025, her condition deteriorated significantly. Swallowing food became increasingly painful, while a persistent dry cough robbed her of strength and rest. What initially appeared to be a minor illness gradually developed into a serious health crisis.

Rather than focusing solely on medical details, Araka’s story examined the broader realities faced by many women living with HIV who also contend with additional illnesses, poverty, and social stigma.

His reporting highlighted the intersection of healthcare access, economic vulnerability, and community support systems, creating a narrative that resonated with both readers and judges.

The award recognizes not only Araka’s journalistic excellence but also the vital role county-based journalists play in shaping national conversations.

Through meticulous reporting and authentic storytelling, he demonstrated how local journalism can shine a spotlight on issues that are often overlooked in mainstream discourse.

Colleagues within the Kisii Press Club hailed the achievement as a victory for grassroots journalism and a testament to the power of regional media in driving meaningful social change.

For the Gusii region, Araka’s national recognition is a source of immense pride. For aspiring journalists, it serves as proof that impactful storytelling rooted in empathy and community realities can influence public understanding and earn recognition on the national stage.

As Kenya continues its fight against HIV, STIs, and related health challenges, journalists such Araka remain indispensable in ensuring that the voices of vulnerable communities are heard, understood, and remembered.
