There are places you visit for leisure, and there are places that stay with you long after you leave. Fred’s Ranch in Kisaju, Isinya, Kajiado County, belongs to the latter.
Located along the Nairobi–Namanga corridor, the expansive property offers more than a conventional countryside getaway. It brings together hospitality, agriculture, livestock, recreation, nature and faith, while telling the story of an entrepreneur who refused to abandon a dream.
My first visit to the ranch quickly became a lesson in resilience and enterprise.
At the entrance is a welcoming inscription: “Fred’s Ranch — Feels Just Like Grandma’s!” It initially sounds like a catchy slogan, but spending time on the property gives it meaning. The phrase evokes the warmth of home, shared meals, family conversations and the slower pace of rural life.
The ranch traces its origins to 1993, when veteran broadcaster Fred Obachi Machoka acquired the land at a time when the area was considerably less developed. The decision came with significant financial and practical challenges, including debt, the sale of part of the property and losses of livestock. Yet the project survived.
Today, the landscape offers a striking contrast to its earlier appearance, demonstrating how patience, investment and vision can turn seemingly unpromising land into an enterprise.
Perhaps the most distinctive feature, however, is not the accommodation or agricultural activities but the messages displayed on trees and along the walkways.
One reads: “Not every closed door is locked. Push.”
Another says: “Switch off your phone and take a walk. The world will survive for 30 minutes.”

For a telecommunications professional accustomed to a permanently connected world, the latter was particularly thought-provoking. Technology connects people across continents, yet it can also disconnect us from nature, family and ourselves.
Another message asks: “If you pray only when you’re in trouble, you’re in trouble.” It captures the ranch’s quiet spiritual dimension and encourages visitors to regard faith as a way of life rather than an emergency response.
The environment itself reinforces the message. Tree-lined paths, orchards, livestock, open spaces and fresh countryside air offer a welcome break from the pace of Nairobi.
Fred’s Ranch is therefore not simply a destination to see; it is a place to pause and reflect.
Its strongest lesson may be that successful enterprises are rarely built overnight. They require vision, resilience, patience and the courage to keep pushing when the door appears closed.
For travellers seeking a destination that combines nature, family, agriculture and reflection, Fred’s Ranch offers an experience that extends beyond sightseeing.
Sometimes, the most memorable journeys are those that leave you thinking.
