The recent passing of His Highness Aga Khan Karim, whose global legacy stands as a beacon of selflessness and philanthropy, calls us to reflect on the values that truly define success.

His work in fostering development, education, and health initiatives continues to inspire millions worldwide.

In a world often driven by self-interest, the Aga Khan’s focus on community and service to humanity stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of contributing to the greater good.

Closer to home in Kenya, we are witnessing the loss of individuals like industrialist Hasmukh Patel, who, like the Aga Khan, dedicated his life to creating value not only for himself but for society at large.

As the owner of Mombasa Cement Company, Patel’s success was grounded in a commitment to philanthropy, leaving behind a legacy of charitable contributions that impacted many lives.

His death, like that of the Aga Khan, forces us to examine the values of selflessness and moral responsibility that should govern how we acquire and utilize wealth.

However, this reflection brings into sharp contrast the conduct of many among Kenya’s economic elite.

It is disheartening to see certain individuals, whose wealth is often amassed through questionable means, flaunting their ill-gotten millions with little regard for the suffering they have caused.

These “wealthy” Kenyans host lavish fundraisers, showcasing their luxurious lifestyles, while the very people they have exploited are left in poverty.

“It is a moral paradox—these individuals boldly brag about their wealth without any sense of accountability or fear of the sources from which their riches come.”

–Isaac Dan Bw’Onyancha

They do so before the very Kenyans from whom they have looted, offering no remorse for their actions.

In light of the passing of figures like the Aga Khan and Hasmukh Patel, we are reminded that wealth, when obtained with integrity and used for the betterment of society, can have a profound, positive impact.

These leaders did not acquire their wealth to hoard it in private closets or to flaunt it for personal gain.

Instead, they used their success as a means to uplift others, creating opportunities, funding education, improving healthcare, and driving development.

This selflessness stands in stark contrast to the greed and corruption that have fueled Kenya’s economic inequality.

Kenya’s current reality demands a serious moral shift on how we acquire, use, and perceive wealth.

If we are to build a prosperous and just society, the worship of material wealth must be replaced with an understanding that true success lies in how we use our resources to improve the lives of others.

The passing of such influential figures as the Aga Khan and Hasmukh Patel should serve as a call to action for all Kenyans.

Let us draw inspiration from their examples and commit to living lives of integrity, generosity, and moral responsibility, ensuring that the wealth we amass contributes to the well-being of society, not to the perpetuation of inequality and suffering.
