In the ever-evolving world of Kenyan politics, the rivalry between President William Ruto and his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, has taken on the shape of a modern-day political drama.
The fallout between the two, once staunch allies, offers a fascinating exploration of political strategies through the lens of the ancient Greek metaphor: the fox and the hedgehog.

In this analogy, the “fox” is adaptable, using a wide range of strategies to tackle challenges, while the “hedgehog” is focused on one central idea or strategy.
In this power struggle, Ruto embodies the fox, and Gachagua, the hedgehog, is going straight for Ruto’s jugular.
President Ruto’s political maneuvering has been nothing short of expansive.
As Gachagua’s increasing vocal criticism threatens his support, particularly in Mount Kenya, Ruto has opted for a charm offensive, shifting his focus to regions that did not back him during the elections.
The president has reached out to Raila Odinga’s strongholds—Luo Nyanza, Western Kenya, and parts of North Eastern—hoping to rebuild the support he is likely to lose in Mount Kenya by tapping into new territories.
In doing so, Ruto has sought to employ a strategy of broad political engagement, attempting to expand his base and adapt to shifting political dynamics.

His attempts to woo new regions, however, have raised questions about the effectiveness of this strategy.
Regions that have long been loyal to Raila and other political figures may not embrace his message as easily, particularly as the political terrain evolves and alliances shift.
Ruto’s efforts to charm these regions may well be a gamble, and despite his strategic outreach, the fox’s maneuvers may not prove sufficient to counteract the direct assault from Gachagua, who remains focused on a singular goal.
In contrast, Gachagua, the hedgehog in this analogy, has remained laser-focused on one core issue: holding Ruto accountable for what he perceives as dishonesty, manipulation, and corruption.
Gachagua’s public criticisms of Ruto’s integrity, accusing him of conmanship and exploitation, have become the focal point of his political identity.
His attacks, especially in the Mount Kenya region, are deeply personal, targeting Ruto’s character rather than his policies.
Gachagua’s unwavering focus on exposing what he views as Ruto’s political missteps has resonated with a growing number of disillusioned supporters who once stood behind the president.
The cracks
What makes Gachagua’s strategy particularly effective is his ability to maintain consistency in his narrative.
While Ruto shifts his attention from one region to another, trying to adapt to the changing political winds, Gachagua’s singular focus on calling out Ruto’s perceived flaws has a relentless quality.
His critiques have exposed cracks in Ruto’s leadership, especially within his inner circle, and his ties with figures like the Kenyatta family and Martha Karua have further weakened Ruto’s standing in the Mount Kenya region.
Gachagua’s political weapon is sharp, precise, and aimed directly at Ruto’s credibility—going for the jugular, so to speak.Ruto’s replacement of Gachagua with Professor Kithure Kindiki as his deputy has done little to quell the storm.
While Kindiki is respected, he lacks the fiery presence and local appeal that Gachagua effortlessly commanded.
Kindiki’s inability to galvanize the electorate in the same way as Gachagua has exposed a leadership vacuum within Ruto’s circle.
This gap has only amplified Gachagua’s influence, as he positions himself as a champion of the people, articulating frustrations with Ruto’s leadership in a manner that strikes a chord with many.
Moreover, Ruto’s handling of civil servants, particularly through salary cuts, has deepened his political vulnerabilities.
The erosion of his relationship with this crucial constituency further undermines his ability to weather Gachagua’s sustained attacks.
If Ruto fails to address these grievances, his political future could be in jeopardy.
In this high-stakes political chess game, the contrast between the fox and the hedgehog is evident.
Ruto, the fox, seeks to adapt and navigate through shifting alliances, employing a wide range of strategies to secure his political future.
But Gachagua, the hedgehog, remains relentlessly focused on a singular, piercing critique of Ruto’s character, targeting the very foundations of his leadership.
As Gachagua’s attacks gain traction, the question remains whether Ruto’s charm offensive will be enough to deflect the growing storm or whether Gachagua’s focus on the president’s perceived corruption and dishonesty will lead to a political downfall.
