The University of Nairobi (UON) has appointed Eng. Prof. Ayub Njoroge Gitau as its new Vice-Chancellor, ushering in a new leadership era at Kenya’s oldest and largest public university.

In a statement issued after a special sitting held on Thursday, the University Council announced that Prof. Gitau will serve as the institution’s 9th Vice-Chancellor, with the appointment taking effect immediately.

The Council said the appointment followed consultations during the special session convened to chart the university’s next phase of leadership and institutional development.

Prof. Gitau, an accomplished engineer and academic, takes over at a time when the university is navigating reforms aimed at strengthening governance, improving financial sustainability and enhancing academic competitiveness both locally and internationally.

The Council also announced the appointment of Prof. Josiah Omollo Aduda as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Finance, Planning and Development.

At the same time, the Council commended Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson for her service as Acting Vice-Chancellor during the transition period.

“The Council has appreciated Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson for her dedicated service as Acting Vice-Chancellor during the transition period,” the statement read.

Prof. Gitau’s appointment places him at the helm of one of Africa’s most recognised higher learning institutions, which has produced several prominent leaders, scholars and professionals across the continent.

The incoming Vice-Chancellor is expected to steer the university through ongoing transformation efforts, including strengthening research, improving infrastructure, addressing funding challenges and enhancing the institution’s global standing.

Both appointments took effect from May 14, 2026.
