Kisii University Vice Chancellor Prof. Nathan Ogechi has called on universities and research institutions across Kenya to deepen collaboration in a bid to strengthen research and innovation.
Speaking during the Third International Multidisciplinary Conference at Kisii University, Prof. Ogechi said closer cooperation among institutions is key to addressing persistent challenges faced by researchers, particularly limited access to modern laboratories and specialised equipment.

He noted that many universities continue to struggle in producing high-quality research due to the high cost of laboratory facilities and research materials.
“If universities work together and partner with other institutions, it is possible to share resources and improve the quality of research,” he said.
Prof. Ogechi proposed that universities within the same region consider establishing specialised laboratories that can be shared, allowing researchers from different institutions to access advanced facilities.
He also stressed the need for investment in highly trained researchers and the development of a strong research culture within universities.
According to the Vice Chancellor, government support has improved through the creation of a State Department for Research, as well as continued backing of institutions such as the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
He further said universities must strengthen collaboration with institutions like KEMRI and international partners to address emerging diseases such as Ebola and other public health challenges.
Prof. Ogechi expressed optimism that stronger partnerships among universities, research institutions and global collaborators will drive discoveries that improve lives and contribute to national development.
