The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to absorb teacher interns into permanent and pensionable employment.
This follows a recent court ruling.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commission said it is working to secure budgetary provisions that will enable the transition of 44,000 serving interns into full employment.
“The Government continues to prioritize job creation and youth employment through the promotion of internship opportunities for graduating professionals,” the statement read, noting that the internship programme has been mainstreamed across the public service since 2019.
The Teacher Internship Programme was introduced to equip newly qualified teachers with practical classroom experience, enhancing their skills and competitiveness in the job market.
However, the court judgment delivered on February 27, 2026, directed the Commission to take steps toward permanent absorption of interns, a move seen as critical in safeguarding their welfare and ensuring effective curriculum delivery.
“The Commission is actively pursuing the necessary budgetary provisions to facilitate the employment of the 44,000 serving teacher interns on permanent and pensionable terms,” said Acting Secretary and Chief Executive E.J. Mitei.
She added that the Commission remains committed to improving teachers’ terms and conditions of service while promoting industrial harmony.
Appealing for patience, the Commission urged interns to allow the Government time to mobilize resources for the transition.
At the same time, it commended all teachers for their dedication.
“The Commission also takes this opportunity to commend all teachers for their unwavering dedication and service in shaping the future of learners across the country,” the statement concluded.
The Commission pledged to continue serving teachers with diligence and commitment.
