For Egetonto Village in Kisii County, Mother’s Day carried a different meaning this year for dozens of widows whose daily lives are often marked by sacrifice, resilience and survival.
For many of the women gathered on Sunday, widowhood has become a painful journey they never imagined taking.

It is a journey filled with loneliness, financial strain and the heavy responsibility of raising children alone.
Yet despite the silent battles they endure, they continue to stand strong for the sake of their families.
It was these untold struggles that formed the heart of a Mother’s Day outreach led by Senator Essy Okenyuri in Bomachoge Chache Constituency.
The widows received foodstuffs and spent time sharing stories of hardship, perseverance and hope.
But beyond the donations, the gathering became a rare moment for the women to feel seen, heard and appreciated.
“Widows are among the most overlooked people in society,” said Sen. Okenyuri.
“Many suffer quietly as though their pain is invisible, yet every day they rise with courage to provide for their children.”
Some of the women spoke of sleepless nights spent worrying about school fees, food and the uncertainty of tomorrow.
Others described the emotional emptiness left behind after losing their spouses.
Still, amid the pain, many continue to carry themselves with dignity and determination.
The senator said the experience reminded her that motherhood is often defined not only by joy, but also by endurance and sacrifice.
“These women continue to give their children hope, love and strength even when they themselves are hurting,” she said.
“Their resilience deserves honour.”
