Kenyan athletes delivered another impressive performance at the Diamond League meeting in Shanghai, China, with sprint star Ferdinand Omanyala and middle-distance queen Faith Kipyegon leading the country’s strong showing on the global stage.
In a statement, Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi praised the athletes for their outstanding performances, saying Kenya continues to cement its reputation in world athletics.

Omanyala thrilled fans after clocking a blistering 9.98 seconds in the men’s 100 metres, finishing under the 10-second mark once again in a performance the PS described as “phenomenal.”
“This feat continues to cement Kenya’s place as the emergent ground for producing globe-conquering sprinters,” Mwangi said.
Meanwhile, Kipyegon produced another dominant display in the women’s 5,000 metres, storming to victory in a world-leading time of 14:24.14.
According to the PS, the Olympic champion’s victory demonstrated her determination and consistency at the highest level of competition.
“This win is a testament to the sheer determination and drive Faith possesses to keep pushing the limits of human endurance and achievements,” he stated.
Kenya also impressed in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, where Faith Cherotich finished second after clocking 8:51.48 in a strong race against a competitive field.
In the men’s 3,000 metres, Reynold Cheruiyot secured second place and registered a personal best time of 7:26.11.
Mwangi hailed the athletes for continuing to raise Kenya’s profile internationally through their talent and discipline.
“We hail these great runners for flying Kenya’s flag high at the global stage. Your sporting talents, professionalism and spirit of sportsmanship in Shanghai remain pillars upon which Kenya’s glory at the international sporting platform is founded on,” he said.
He congratulated Team Kenya for what he termed an “incredible showing” at the prestigious athletics event.
