Veteran Ugandan rally driver Ponsiano Lwakataka, popularly known as “Mafu Mafu,” says he is returning to the bucket seat determined to prove that experience still matters as the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally gets underway this weekend.
The crowd favorite, famed for his entertaining personality and fearless driving style, says he is eager to challenge the powerful Rally2 machines expected to dominate the event.

“I have never won the Pearl Rally, but I’m back to give the super cars (R5s) a run for their money,” Lwakataka joked.
Widely known across Ugandan rally circles for his trademark banter, the Masaka-based driver believes he still has the pace to trouble younger competitors.
“I’m back to show the young boys that speed and experience still count,” he said with a grin. “And yes, we’ll keep the good vibes coming. Rally is serious, but fans love a laugh too.”
Lwakataka expects massive support from fans travelling from Masaka, which lies close to the rally route in western Uganda.
“Masaka is near, so my people will be out in numbers. We are ready,” he added.
Together with fellow Ugandan rally star Duncan Mubiru, popularly known as Kikankane, Lwakataka remains among the most celebrated drivers in Uganda’s vibrant rally scene.
His flamboyant style, crowd interaction and aggressive driving have earned him a loyal following, and he hopes that home support can inspire a strong performance against the continental elite.
“When the fans are shouting your name, the car goes faster,” he said. “We want to give them a show and bring the fight to the top ARC crews.”
The Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally will run across 188.39 kilometres of competitive stages on Friday and Saturday, attracting a strong field from across the continent.
With Masaka fans expected to flood the stages in support of their hero, Mafu Mafu’s return is set to add excitement, color and entertainment to an already highly anticipated African Rally Championship showdown.
