Prominent lawyer Wakili Danstan Omari has called on journalists to exercise vigilance in their reporting in line with Kenya’s current defamation law.
Speaking during a visit by officials from the Gusii Welfare Association (GUSWA), Omari stressed that the media must adapt to the evolving legal landscape to safeguard both press freedom and accountability.

“The law has changed, and journalists must be keen,” he said. “Freedom of expression is protected, but it comes with responsibility. Accuracy and fairness are no longer optional—they are mandatory.”
Omari underscored the importance of ethical journalism, urging reporters to balance the public’s right to know with respect for individual dignity.
He also highlighted the role of the media in strengthening democracy.
“You are the watchdogs of society. If you fail, the nation suffers,” he added.
Omari reflected on broader civic duty, encouraging young professionals to embrace patriotism and service.
“Our country needs citizens who are bold enough to speak the truth, yet humble enough to serve,” he said.
The visit by the GUSWA delegation, led by chairman Nyang’au Araka, advisory board member Ken Bosire, and member Denis Kirwa, was marked by the presentation of a gift to Omari on behalf of the welfare group.
Araka praised Omari’s longstanding commitment to justice and mentorship, including offering pro bono services to two members of the welfare group who found themselves in trouble with the law as a result of their work.
“You have stood firm for the voiceless. This token is a small way of saying thank you,” he noted.
Bosire emphasised the association’s mission to support community leaders who embody integrity.
“We believe in uplifting those who uplift others. Wakili, your work inspires us to keep pushing for fairness in society,” he said.
Kirwa stressed the importance of unity among professionals and community organisations.
“When lawyers, journalists, and welfare groups work together, society becomes stronger. This gift symbolises our solidarity,” he remarked.
Omari thanked the officials for their gesture, reaffirming his commitment to justice and mentorship.
“I am humbled. Let us continue building a Kenya where truth, dignity, and service guide our actions,” he said.
He added that vigilance and responsibility remain central to the country’s democratic journey.
