Grief and shock have engulfed parts of Nyamira County after two separate road accidents, occurring barely a day apart, claimed at least 20 lives and left dozens of families counting their losses.
The latest tragedy struck on Sunday evening at Chabera area along the Kisii–Kisumu Road, where a devastating crash claimed 12 lives.

Most of the victims were returning from a wedding ceremony in Kakamega, a journey that had begun in joy but ended in unimaginable sorrow.
Nine of those who died were from Rang’enyo area in Nyamaiya Ward within West Mugirango Constituency, with four victims drawn from the same family.
As word of the accident spread, villages in Rang’enyo and surrounding areas fell silent, with relatives struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of loved ones who had only hours earlier been celebrating with kin.
The Chabera crash came less than 24 hours after another fatal accident on Saturday evening at Bw’Arani area, between Ikonge and Ekeronyo towns, where eight people lost their lives.
The back-to-back tragedies have deeply shaken the region, compounding grief for communities already reeling from loss.
West Mugirango Member of Parliament Stephen Mogaka said the successive accidents had cast a heavy cloud of sorrow over the constituency and neighbouring areas, noting that the victims were not statistics but families torn apart without warning.
““My heart is bleeding, once again, in just under 24 hours following a fatal accident at Chabera area along the Kisii–Kisumu road that claimed 12 precious lives,” Mogaka said.
He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families on behalf of his family and the people of West Mugirango, and assured those injured and receiving treatment in various hospitals of continued prayers for healing and recovery.
“The loss of so many loved ones all at once is a pain one cannot imagine,” the MP said.
Residents and leaders have since renewed calls for caution on the roads, particularly as travel increases during the festive season.
They warned that carelessness and fatigue among motorists continue to cost innocent lives.
