The Lake Victoria State of the Basin Report (2025) has been unveiled, providing a detailed assessment of the ecological health, socio-economic dynamics, and governance trends within the Lake Victoria Basin.
The report was launched during the Development Partners Round Table at the inaugural Lake Victoria Day celebrations in Mwanza, Tanzania, held recently.

A preview edition was first introduced at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, in November 2025.
Covering a region that supports more than 45 million people across the five East African Community (EAC) Partner States, the report is positioned as a landmark evidence-based blueprint.
It bridges local realities with regional policymaking, offering a shared platform for national and transboundary action.
The findings are expected to inform investment decisions and strategies on water quality, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and infrastructure development.
By integrating environmental, socio-economic, and governance data, the report sets out a unified vision for sustainable development in the basin.
The report also underscores the impact of German technical and financial cooperation.
Drawing on data from the Water Information System (WIS), financed by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through KfW, the initiative has invested EUR 60 million under the “Lake Victoria Basin Integrated Water Resources Management Programme, Phases I–III.”
The WIS has become a critical tool supporting the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) in coordinating sustainable development and resource management across the basin.
Uganda’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Environment, Dr. Alfred Okidi, joined other dignitaries in unveiling the report.
“This report unveiled today highlights the myriad challenges facing the basin that require critical and urgent interventions among the EAC Partner States,” he said.
