Kenyans have a reputation for waiting until the very last minute, and when it comes to voter registration, that habit can be costly.
Many rush in the final days, while some end up missing out completely, then call for extension of the time.

This is why the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has reminded citizens that the true power of shaping the nation’s destiny lies in a simple but profound document—the voter’s card.
Kenya will have a general election on August 10th, next year.
“The credibility and legitimacy of any election is dependent on a comprehensive and accurate Register of Voters,” the Commission emphasized in its latest update.
“Without registration, the constitutional rights guaranteed under Article 38—participating in free, fair and regular elections, joining political parties, and vying for public office—remain inaccessible.
With just two days left before the close of the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR), IEBC is urging all eligible Kenyans to act.
“By doing so, citizens play a direct role in shaping Kenya’s future and strengthening our democratic governance,” the statement issued on Friday read.
The Commission commended the millions who have already enlisted, transferred their registration, or updated their particulars.
As of 23rd April 2026, 1,876,274 new voters had been added to the roll, alongside 159,410 transfers and 2,817 updates of particulars.
This surge reflects a growing recognition that the voter’s card is more than an administrative requirement—it is the key to participation, accountability, and representation.
“Those who have registered have taken the first step in ensuring their voices are heard. We urge the rest to seize this opportunity before it closes,” IEBC declared.
