The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into incidents arising from the second anniversary of the Gen Z protests held on June 25, 2026.
The incidents include alleged abductions, injuries, detentions and cases of excessive use of force by police.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, IPOA said preliminary findings showed that police deployed public order management measures, including road barricades in parts of Nairobi and Mombasa, where protests were reported.
The authority noted that officers used tear gas and acoustic devices to disperse crowds in some areas of Nairobi’s Central Business District, while also employing direct engagement techniques with protesters to de-escalate tensions.
IPOA, however, raised concerns over reports that some officers wore balaclavas, operated in plain clothes and used vehicles with concealed registration plates despite existing court orders.
“The Authority has continued to receive and verify reports, including allegations of missing persons, abductions, detention, and physical assaults on persons arrested during the protests,” the statement said.
According to IPOA, investigators have already recorded statements from victims alleging abductions and injuries in Nairobi’s CBD, as well as a separate incident involving a person living with a disability in Nakuru.
The authority said it had also provided psychosocial support to some victims who presented themselves for statement recording.
The watchdog revealed that it is actively monitoring the evolving security situation in Mathare, Huruma and Kariobangi North, while conducting investigations into recorded cases of alleged excessive force by police officers.
“The Authority assures the public that investigations will be thorough and impartial and that any persons found culpable will be held accountable in accordance with the law,” IPOA stated.
The agency urged the National Police Service to uphold the rule of law, respect human rights and maintain professionalism in handling demonstrations. It also appealed to members of the public to exercise their constitutional rights peacefully and through lawful channels.
IPOA further called on anyone with information that could assist investigations to report through its offices, toll-free number 1559, email, or official social media platforms.
The statement was signed by IPOA Vice Chairperson Ann Wanjiku Mwangi, who reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
