Under the bright lights of a packed operating theatre at Kenyatta National Hospital, a team of surgeons, nurses and specialists worked with intense concentration around a patient fighting severe heart complications.
Clad in green surgical gowns and masks, the medics carefully carried out a delicate six-hour cardiac operation that would ultimately save a life.

The complex procedure was performed on a 35-year-old patient suffering from advanced heart valve disease and related complications.
According to the hospital, the surgery involved mitral valve replacement, tricuspid valve repair, and reduction of an enlarged upper heart chamber caused by long-term valve damage.
During the operation, doctors temporarily stopped the patient’s heart while a heart-lung machine maintained blood circulation throughout the body — a standard but highly specialized process in major cardiac surgery.
KNH described the surgery as a successful example of collaborative medical care between its specialists and Egyptian cardiac experts, demonstrating the growing capacity of local hospitals to handle advanced procedures that many Kenyans often believe are only possible abroad.
The hospital said the partnership is helping expand access to life-saving heart treatment within the country while reducing the financial and emotional burden associated with overseas medical travel.
KNH noted that the operation stands as a symbol of hope for many patients battling complex heart conditions in Kenya.
