The African Union Commission (AUC) leadership transition happening this weekend has attracted huge continental attention never seen in recent times.
In particular, all eyes are on Raila Odinga, the seasoned Kenyan opposition leader and former Prime Minister.

With his vast political experience, Pan-African credentials, and long-standing commitment to democracy and economic development, Odinga’s bid has sparked interest and debate across the continent.
The Road to the AU Chair
The AU Chairperson position is one of the most powerful diplomatic dockets in Africa.
The occupant oversees the implementation of the AU’s agenda, coordinating policies among member states, and representing the continent on global platforms.
The position, currently held by Moussa Faki Mahamat from Chad, is set for renewal this weekend.
Odinga’s bid comes at a time when the AU is facing significant geopolitical and economic challenges, including the need for stronger regional integration, addressing security concerns, and boosting intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Odinga’s Strengths and Support Base
Odinga, a veteran Kenyan politician, has built strong relationships with African leaders over the years.
His tenure as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development saw him advocate for major continental infrastructure projects, such as the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor and the Trans-African Highway Network.
His leadership in these initiatives has earned him credibility as a Pan-Africanist and development advocate.
Within Kenya, President William Ruto has expressed total support for Odinga’s bid, signaling a rare moment of political unity in a country often polarized by elections.
However, Kenya’s backing alone will not be enough—Odinga must secure endorsements from key regional blocs such as the East African Community (EAC), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Challenges Ahead
Despite his political acumen, Odinga’s path to the AU top job is not without obstacles.
First, the AU leadership selection process is highly competitive and influenced by diplomatic maneuvering among member states.
Two other African leaders are vying for the position, and may seek to counterbalance East Africa’s influence.
Second, Odinga’s political history—marked by multiple unsuccessful presidential bids and allegations of electoral disputes—might be used by critics to question his ability to unify the continent.
Some African leaders may perceive him as a divisive figure, despite his democratic credentials.
Another major factor is geopolitical alignment.
Africa’s strategic partnerships with global powers such as China, the United States, and the European Union play a role in AU leadership transitions.
Odinga will need to navigate these interests while ensuring that his candidacy is seen as a unifying force for Africa rather than a continuation of regional or political rivalries.
What Lies Ahead?
Odinga’s past networks in Africa, combined with Kenya’s growing influence in regional affairs, could give him a competitive edge.
His ability to secure endorsements from influential African leaders and organizations such as the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) will also be crucial.
Additionally, Odinga’s vision for the AU will be a key determinant of his success.
If he presents a compelling strategy for addressing Africa’s pressing challenges—such as economic recovery post-COVID-19, peace and security, climate change, and governance reforms—he may win the support of countries looking for strong leadership at the AU.
In essence, Raila Odinga’s bid for the AU Chairperson position represents a significant moment in his political career and for Kenya’s diplomatic standing.
While he faces stiff competition and geopolitical complexities, his experience and Pan-African appeal could position him as a strong candidate.
Kenya will be keenly watching as the curtain falls on the AUC election in Adis, Ethiopia this weekend, for the outcome will influence the next direction of local politics. –
