Families affected by human-wildlife conflict in Kilifi County will on Wednesday receive compensation during an official event at the Marafa Vocational Training Centre in Magarini Constituency.
Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, will preside over the event, which marks a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to address the escalating conflict between communities and wildlife, particularly elephants migrating from Tsavo East National Park.

Over 1,300 cases of human-wildlife conflict have been reported in Kilifi since 2021.
Tomorrow’s exercise will see the official issuance of compensation cheques to victims, as part of the government’s broader initiative under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013 and the National Human-Wildlife Coexistence Strategy.
Miano will be expected to outline ongoing and future government mitigation measures aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence between local communities and wildlife.
The event will also feature an interactive session with compensation beneficiaries and local leaders, providing a platform for feedback and dialogue.
Nationwide, the government has disbursed over KSh 2.8 billion in compensation to affected families.
The Kilifi event will focus on clearing pending claims and reinforcing the state’s commitment to support affected households.
