A section of elders from the Abagusii community has moved to rally support ahead of President William Ruto’s anticipated three-day development tour of the Gusii region.
Led by Obino Nyambane, the group—drawn from the Abagusii Council of Elders called on residents to turn out in large numbers to receive him.

Nyambane said the President’s visit presents a crucial opportunity for the region to secure more development projects and strengthen ties with the national government.
Speaking ahead of the tour, Nyamabañe urged unity among residents, emphasizing the importance of engaging constructively with the Head of State.
“The Gusii region, like other parts of the country, deserves equitable development and should position itself to benefit from ongoing national programs,” Nyambane said.
The elders also issued a warning to political leaders who have been openly critical of the government, cautioning that such sentiments could undermine development prospects.
They stressed that President Ruto, as the sitting Head of State, should be accorded respect and support during his visit.
“We must welcome the President in large numbers because we want development like other regions,” Nyamabañe said, adding that unity would send a strong message about the community’s priorities.
Their remarks come amid growing criticism from some quarters over the state of ongoing projects in the region, including concerns that some initiatives launched previously remain incomplete, such as the Kisii Cancer Centre.
Despite the concerns, the elders maintained that engagement—not confrontation—offers the best path forward, expressing optimism that the visit will unlock new opportunities and accelerate development across the Gusii region.
