From the quiet hills of Embonga Village in Keera Location, Bogichora Ward, Nyamira County, emerged a man whose life became a powerful testimony of resilience, faith, and divine purpose.
Apostle Dr. Joe Kayo’s journey from a humble village boy to one of Africa’s most influential Pentecostal preachers remains a source of pride and inspiration to his home community and beyond.

His early life was marked by hardship and sorrow. At the age of twelve, he lost his beloved mother, a tragedy that left a deep wound in his young heart.
The loss plunged the family into difficult circumstances, forcing him to leave school at an early age.
Poverty, uncertainty, and personal struggles became part of his daily reality. Yet, even amid these challenges, a greater purpose was quietly unfolding.
In 1957, while seriously ill and hospitalized in Mombasa, Joe Kayo attended a crusade conducted by the renowned American evangelist T. L. Osborn.
It was during this period that he experienced a miraculous healing from the illness that had brought him to the brink of despair.
More importantly, he surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and received salvation. That encounter transformed the course of his life forever.
Following his conversion, he embraced the call to ministry with unwavering commitment.
He began preaching the Gospel across Kenya and neighboring countries, sharing a message of hope, faith, and redemption.
His ministry grew steadily, touching countless lives and bringing many to the Christian faith.
Over the years, Apostle Joe Kayo became one of the foremost pioneers of Pentecostal Christianity in East Africa.
Through evangelistic crusades, church planting, leadership training, and revival meetings, he played a central role in the expansion of the Pentecostal movement.
Impact across nations
His influence extended far beyond Kenya, reaching nations across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the United States of America, where he ministered to diverse audiences and shared the transforming power of the Gospel.
Despite his international stature, he remained deeply connected to the values that shaped him in Embonga.
He carried with him the humility, determination, and faith that had sustained him through life’s trials.
For decades, he served as a spiritual father to thousands of believers and ministers.
His teachings on salvation, holiness, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the power of prayer inspired generations of Christians throughout the continent.
In November 2023, Apostle Dr. Joe Kayo passed on at the age of 86 while receiving treatment in Nairobi.
Though his earthly journey came to an end, his legacy continues to live on through the churches he established, the leaders he mentored, and the countless lives transformed through his ministry.
Today, the people of Embonga, Keera Location, Bogichora Ward, Nyamira County, proudly celebrate him as one of their most distinguished sons.
His life story reminds us that humble beginnings do not define one’s destiny.
Through faith, perseverance, and obedience to God’s calling, a village boy from Embonga rose to become a global ambassador of the Gospel and a spiritual giant whose influence will be felt for generations.
