Kenya is bracing for unusual weather patterns as El Niño conditions develop in 2026, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD).
The department’s June-July-August seasonal forecast highlights near-average to below-average rainfall in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and Northwestern Kenya.

At the Coast, however, rainfall is expected to be near-average to above-average.
“The combined effects of El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole significantly influence rainfall patterns over Kenya,” said Edward M. Muriuki, Acting Director of Meteorological Services.
He noted that enhanced rainfall is likely during the October-November-December season if both phenomena strengthen later in the year.
The forecast also points to warmer-than-average temperatures across most regions.
Areas east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, will experience occasional cool and cloudy conditions with light rains, while the Southeastern lowlands and Northeastern Kenya are expected to remain largely sunny and dry.
KMD urged the public to stay alert to official advisories.
“We remain committed to providing timely weather and climate information to safeguard lives, livelihoods, and property,” Muriuki emphasized.
The department will issue the national October-November-December forecast in late August or early September, working closely with disaster response agencies to support preparedness and mitigation measures.
